100-ish Word Thought: Be Nice With Your Marketing

wedding business marketing advice from Julianne Smith

Being Cheap Doesn't Pay

There's pressure for your marketing to be clever and funny to get that ever-elusive engagement, which we've convinced ourselves is the key to staying in business. In your social media algorithm exhaustion haze, remember: there's funny and then there's rude. It's a not-so-fine line between amusing and disrespectful. When you poke fun at clients for not knowing something, the size of their budget, or design choices, it's condescending. It might engage industry peers with a smile, but to potential clients, it comes across as mean. When you go for the cheap laugh, you're chasing the wrong engagement. Instead, get clear on who your audience is. Plan your marketing to solve their problems and trust that the right engagement will come. Be mindful that patronizing jokes turn away those that could actually hire you and you don't even know it.
